ORCHESAT

Contributing to the management and operation of SatCom services from ground infraestructure

This R&D project has been co-founded by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) and Spanish Ministry of Science, innovation and Universities along with the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) under file EXP 00152039 / IDI-20230024.

Anchor 1

Objective

ORCHESAT is a project which develops a new cloud-based solution able to orchestrate different services for the operations of satellite communications services, facilitating the automation and optimization of teleport management and customers services.

Project Description

ORCHESAT (Orchestration platform for managing SatCom ground segment infrastructure with cloud based VSAT network management systems) is a project coordinated by Integrasys and will contribute to the management and operation of SatCom services from ground infrastructure.

The project aims to develop a new cloud-based solution able to orchestrate different services for the operations of satellite communications services, facilitating the automation and optimization of teleport management and customers services.

The project has 2 pillars:

  • The orchestrator platform, a satellite focused IP network management suite that is developed and provided by the company CAPANET, and that aims to seamless integrate tools from third parties’ vsat platform suppliers.

  • The application/services itself that provide specific functionalities and interfaces, executed on top of the orchestration platform, and easing the automation process for SatCom teleport management, service providers and satcom users. On the scope of the project there will be the following connected services:

    • Link budgeting tool, developed by Integrasys, that will provide an accurate modelling of current and upcoming satellite capacity and services (data and broadcast) including state-of-the-art payload technologies for maximum usability and smooth product evolution. This includes in particular new capabilities enabled by digital satellite payloads such as flexible beam topologies and flexible allocation of bandwidth and power across beams.

    • Commissioning system, developed by Integrasys, to fully automate and control the terminals that are active in the network.

    • Carrier monitoring, developed by Integrasys, that will provide real-time information about active carriers and the SLA and events/alarms that impact the QoS of the SatCom services.

The orchestration of different services will enable the automation and facilitate the interoperability among the different tools, exhibiting new functionalities based on the connection of services and data sharing. It will help to cover all the stages of the ground segment operation, from the design of a network/solution for a customer, capacity management, deployment, monitoring, support, to deployment and management of networks.

As example, prediction of QoS of link budgeting tools, together with the inventory and status of terminals provided by commissioning system and the QoS estimation provided by the carrier monitoring system will feed and optimize the capacity management tool of teleport, what in turn also contribute to the automation of the billing system.

Members of the Consortium

Main project development location: Las Rozas, Madrid (Spain)
Budget: 485.006 €
Execution period: October 2022 – March 2024
Cofounded by the European Union, as part of the program 'Europa se siente'

Members of the consortium

The international consortium has 2 partners, Integrasys SA (Spanish company) and Capanet (US company):

  • Role of INTEGRASYS: Integrasys is the coordinator of the project. Integrasys provides the network tools related to link budgeting, commissioning of satcom terminals and carrier monitoring. These tools will be redesigned to be tailored to the concept of orchestration. The full aggregated product will be also specified and implemented.

  • Role of CAPANETCapanet is the main contributor to the orchestration platform. As a participant, Capanet will lead the implementation the proper software modules of the orchestration platform to facilitate the integration of the services developed by Integrasys. Capanet will support the integration of the Integrasys tools and the validation.

Project Results

The ORCHESAT project has been executed very satisfactorily. In fact, in 2024 it has become one of the company's core projects and greater achievements have been achieved than those established in the objectives.

An example of this is the complete integration of a fourth application (FlexCap) and the implementation of the rest of the solutions within ORCHESAT. In addition, an example of the importance of this project in the company is the establishment of a new commercial name, EM&C, and Integrasys' intention to continue developing the platform.

As a summary of the main results of the project we can highlight:

  1. Good coordination of the project: Meetings have been organized between CDTI, Integrasys, Capanet and G&S Satcom, and later between the companies. In addition to defining the tasks to be carried out and the objectives of each party, NDA agreements were signed and documents and software were shared.

  2. Architectural design of the complete ORCHESAT system by Integrasys: the design of the APIs and automation services have been carried out without deviations and the platform is operational.

  3. Implementation of connection and data transfer between the service tools, having successfully completed the integration between the Beam Budget, Flexcap, Controlsat and Satmotion solutions.

  4. Integration of the solutions in the orchestration platform: the implementation of the solutions has been achieved. As mentioned in the activities, we have integrated all the APIs of the Integrasys applications with those shared by the CAPANET platform.

  5. Integration of all SATCOM and space solutions in the ORCHESAT platform (EMC). As already mentioned in the previous points, there are a total of FIFTEEN activities:

    • Enterprise

    • Veryfiling

    • Beam Budget

    • Beam Budget LEO/MEO

    • Best Path

    • FlexCap

    • LEO NMS

    • Satmotion

    • Alusat

    • Controlsat/Vectorsat

    • InterGEO

    • InterLEO

    • CleanRF

    • Orbisat

    • EO Master

Conclusions

The project has been executed satisfactorily and in these eighteen months, the planned milestones have been reached:

  • Ms 1: Design and specification (Month 5): The necessary requirements have been defined, the  service automation processes and the design of the APIs and the structure of the ORCHESAT platform have been completed.

  • Ms 2: First version of the software (Month 16). The tools have been connected, and work has been done on their implementation and integration into the ORCHESAT platform.

  • Ms 3: Validation in representative environment – Final version of ORCHESAT (Month 18) – Test and validation report, and final version of ORCHESAT application.
