ORCHESAT

Contributing to the management and operation of SatCom services from ground infraestructure

Anchor 1

Objective

ORCHESAT (2022 - 2024) is a project that develops a new cloud-based solution able to orchestrate different services for the operations of satellite communications services, facilitating the automation and optimization of teleport management and customers services.

Project Description

ORCHESAT (Orchestration platform for managing SatCom ground segment infrastructure with cloud based VSAT network management systems) is a project coordinated by Integrasys and will contribute to the management and operation of SatCom services from ground infrastructure.

The project aims to develop a new cloud-based solution able to orchestrate different services for the operations of satellite communications services, facilitating the automation and optimization of teleport management and customers services.

The project has two pillars:

  • The Orchestrator Platform, a satellite focused IP network management suite that is developed and provided by the company Capanet, and that aims to seamless integrate tools from third parties’ vsat platform suppliers.

  • The Application/Services itself that provide specific functionalities and interfaces, executed on top of the orchestration platform, and easing the automation process for SatCom teleport management, service providers and satcom users. On the scope of the project there will be the following connected services:

    • Link Budgeting tool, developed by Integrasys, that will provide an accurate modelling of current and upcoming satellite capacity and services (data and broadcast) including state-of-the-art payload technologies for maximum usability and smooth product evolution. This includes in particular new capabilities enabled by digital satellite payloads such as flexible beam topologies and flexible allocation of bandwidth and power across beams.

    • Commissioning System, developed by Integrasys, to fully automate and control the terminals that are active in the network.

    • Carrier Monitoring, developed by Integrasys, that will provide real-time information about active carriers and the SLA and events/alarms that impact the QoS of the SatCom services.

The orchestration of different service will enable the automation and facilitate the interoperability among the different tools, exhibiting new functionalities based on the connection of services and data sharing. It will help to cover all the stages of the ground segment operation, from the design of a network/solution for a customer, capacity management, deployment, monitoring, support, to deployment and management of networks.

As example, prediction of QoS of link budgeting tools, together with the inventory and status of terminals provided by commissioning system and the QoS estimation provided by the carrier monitoring system will feed and optimize the capacity management tool of teleport, what in turn also contribute to the automation of the billing system.

Members of the Consortium

The international consortium has two partners, Integrasys SA (Spanish company) and Capanet Communications (US company).

Role of Integrasys SA

Integrasys is the coordinator of the project. Integrasys provides the network tools related to link budgeting, commissioning of SatCom terminals and carrier monitoring. These tools will be redesigned to be tailored to the concept of orchestration. The full aggregated product will be also specified and implemented.

Role of Capanet Communications

Capanet is the main contributor to the orchestration platform. As a participant, Capanet will leadthe implementation the proper software modules of the orchestration platform to facilitate the integration of the services developed by Integrasys. Capanet will support the integration of the Integrasys tools and the validation.

Execution Period

1 October 2022 - 31 March 2024

This R&D project has been co-founded by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) and Spanish Ministry of Science, innovation and Universities along with the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) under file EXP 00152039 / IDI-20230024
